I’m excited to share my recent interview with Jessica Lund of ERA Contemporary, now live on Medium. In this in-depth conversation, I delve into my creative process, exploring the central themes that shape my art—ambiguity, identity, and the blending of classical and abstract techniques. You can read the full interview here: Embracing Ambiguity – The Art of Deborah Scott.
The Journey Behind My Art
In the interview, Jessica and I discuss how my artistic journey has been shaped by my desire to bridge the gap between figurative art and abstraction. My work is deeply influenced by classical painting techniques, particularly the symbolism used in Renaissance art. However, I also incorporate contemporary elements that disrupt the narrative, reflecting the complexities of modern life. This conversation touches on how these influences come together to create visual stories that explore both personal and universal experiences.
Exploring Identity Through Ambiguity
A key theme we explored is how ambiguity plays a central role in my work. I use abstraction to leave parts of my subjects’ stories undefined, allowing viewers to engage with the hidden aspects of identity. This mirrors the concept of Johari’s Window, which emphasizes what is known, what is concealed, and what remains unknown—both to ourselves and others. The discussion in ERA Contemporary highlights how this complexity makes my work resonate with viewers on a deeper emotional and intellectual level.
Where Art and Personal Stories Meet
During the interview, I also shared how my past career in global marketing has influenced my approach to art. Understanding human archetypes and storytelling was key in marketing, and now, these elements are central to my painting practice. I transform personal biographies into universal narratives, inviting viewers to see their own experiences reflected in the stories I tell on canvas.
