My Vermont Studio Center Experience: August Reflections

My Vermont Studio Center Experience: August Reflections

Spending the month of August at the Vermont Studio Center was an incredible and transformative experience, one I’ll carry with me throughout my artistic journey. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of New England, the setting alone was a source of inspiration. Surrounded by verdant hills, vibrant forests, and the calming presence of the Gihon River, I found a new sense of clarity and focus in my work. There’s something about the serenity of nature that allows creativity to flow more freely, and being immersed in this peaceful environment was a gift.

Working Alongside Brilliant Artists and Writers

One of the most inspiring aspects of the residency was the chance to work alongside 30 immensely talented visual artists and writers. Each of us brought unique perspectives and ideas to the table, and the collaborative energy in the studios was palpable. Not only did we enjoy open studios, and artist presentations, but every day was an opportunity to exchange thoughts, explore new techniques, and gain insight from others’ processes.

The diversity of practices and approaches at the Vermont Studio Center created a fertile ground for creativity. From painters, photographers, sculptors, and installation artists to poets, fiction, and nonfiction writers, we all found ways to connect, share, and push each other to new heights. I now have a network of artists whom I not only admire but consider lifelong friends.

Nourishing the Body and Soul

The meals provided at the residency were nothing short of amazing. Thoughtfully prepared and delicious, the food was a daily highlight and gave us the fuel we needed to stay focused on our work. Not having to worry about meal prep freed up so much mental and emotional space, allowing us to dedicate more time and energy to our art. The communal dining experiences were also a great way to bond with fellow residents, fostering a sense of community that went beyond the studio walls.

Mentorship and Expertise from Visiting Artists

One of the most rewarding parts of the residency was the opportunity to engage with visiting artists and writers. These experienced professionals generously shared their expertise, offering invaluable mentorship and feedback on our work. Their presentations, studio visits, and critiques were generous, insightful and inspiring. The insights they provided were not just about technical skills but also about navigating the broader art world, pushing creative boundaries, and finding a personal voice within the noise of contemporary art.

Friends for Life

The month at Vermont Studio Center wasn’t just about creating art—it was about forming connections that will last a lifetime. The friendships I made are incredibly meaningful, built on a foundation of mutual respect, creativity, and shared experiences. We all came to Vermont with the intention of deepening our craft, and in the process, we also created a supportive community of artists and writers who will continue to inspire and encourage each other long after the residency is over.

My time at Vermont Studio Center was truly transformative. From the inspiring natural environment to the brilliant minds I had the privilege to collaborate with, I left feeling creatively rejuvenated and grateful for the experience. I look forward to staying connected with the wonderful people I met and carrying the lessons I learned into my future work.

If you ever have the opportunity to apply to Vermont Studio Center, do it. It’s an experience that will nourish your artistic soul and leave you with memories and friendships that last a lifetime. Keep an eye on my Instagram for updates on future projects inspired by my time in Vermont.
