Running From Stillness
Running From Stillness captures a moment suspended between fear and resolve. The painting depicts a young woman curled up in a chair, her body tense and her gaze anxiously cast over her shoulder as if watching for something unseen. Her bright Nike high-tops stand out vividly against the dark, moody background—a quiet symbol of hope, strength, and escape.
The painting is inspired by the story of a young woman who described her demons as constant companions, following her through every landscape she inhabited, from sunlit deserts to the overcast skies of Seattle. While she treasured the light of the places she once called home, she realized that her inner world shaped her perceptions far more than her surroundings.
Her Nike shoes became her talisman, a secret weapon that gave her a fleeting sense of power and freedom. In the artist’s observation, when she wore the shoes, she could outrun her demons, if only for a second. Even without moving.”
Through this narrative, Running From Stillness explores the tension between inner turmoil and fleeting empowerment, reminding us that sometimes even small objects or rituals can help us momentarily escape what holds us back.

Windows Within: Universal Narratives in Fractured Realism
This body of work by Deborah Scott explores the profound connections between personal stories and shared human experiences. Through a series of conversations and interviews with individuals from diverse backgrounds, Scott uncovers intimate narratives of struggle, resilience, and triumph. These seemingly unique moments are transformed into powerful works of art, revealing their universality and the interconnectedness of all human experiences.
Each painting in Windows Within serves as both a reflection and a revelation, embodying Scott’s belief that art is a mirror to the complexities of identity and existence. Her work draws on the psychological framework of Johari’s Window, exploring the interplay between the visible and hidden aspects of the self. By blending classical techniques with intentional disruptions—rips, tears, and abstract shapes—Scott creates a dynamic visual language that captures the fragmented, evolving nature of contemporary life.
Windows Within is an emotional and visual journey, inviting viewers to see themselves in the stories of others and to consider the profound universality of human connection.
